Apple TV is developing Bad News Dads, a half-hour mystery comedy starring and executive produced by James Marsden. The project combines recreational baseball, middle-aged friendship, family responsibilities, and an amateur murder investigation built around a group of fathers who are far more confident than capable.

The proposed series comes from Stephen Falk, the creator of the acclaimed comedy You’re the Worst, along with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television. It is based on an upcoming novel by screenwriter and author Adam Frost.

Bad News Dads remains in development, which is different from receiving a formal series order. Apple TV has not announced a production schedule, additional cast members, episode count, director, or release date. Development could lead to a pilot, a full order, further revisions, or no completed series at all.

Marsden’s involvement as both star and executive producer gives the project a prominent lead while its scripts and production plans move forward.

Bad News Dads Mixes Baseball With Murder

Bad News Dads follows a struggling recreational baseball team made up largely of fathers in their 40s. The Los Angeles team rarely wins, and its players appear more skilled at creating problems than scoring runs.

Marsden is attached to play Ben, the team’s catcher and a father hungry for friendship, excitement, and something beyond the repetitive demands of daily parenting. His opportunity arrives after the wife of one of his teammates dies in circumstances that begin to look suspicious.

Ben recruits two teammates to investigate what they increasingly believe may have been murder. They have no law-enforcement experience, no investigative training, and little understanding of the risks surrounding the case. Their confidence sends the three fathers into a mystery that could endanger their friendships, marriages, and families.

The premise places an amateur investigation inside an ordinary recreational sports community. Practices, games, school pickups, packed lunches, and domestic arguments can continue while the men attempt to identify a possible killer among people they already know.

That contrast should give the series room to move between comedy and suspense without abandoning its family setting. The fathers may believe they have discovered a new purpose, while their partners see three unreliable men becoming dangerously obsessed with a theory.

Baseball also gives the characters a natural reason to remain together. The team connects people who might otherwise have little in common beyond age, parenthood, and the fading hope that they may eventually win a game. Once suspicion enters the group, every teammate can become a witness, suspect, or source of another poorly conceived lead.

James Marsden Expands His Apple TV Work

Bad News Dads would continue James Marsden’s increasingly active relationship with Apple TV. The actor joined the second season of Your Friends & Neighbors, playing a charismatic new arrival whose presence creates problems for Jon Hamm’s Andrew Cooper.

Apple TV has also ordered Disavowed, an action thriller starring and executive produced by Marsden. In that series, he is set to play Brad Griffin, an experienced CIA case officer fired while pursuing the assassin responsible for killing a colleague. Griffin continues the hunt by targeting the federal bounty placed on the suspect.

Disavowed has already received a series order, while Bad News Dads is at an earlier stage. The distinction means Disavowed is moving toward production as an announced Apple Original, whereas the mystery comedy must still pass through Apple TV’s development process.

The two projects offer Marsden sharply different roles. Disavowed places him inside an international intelligence thriller. Bad News Dads gives him a suburban father whose desire for companionship pulls him into a homemade criminal investigation.

Marsden has frequently worked with characters who use charm to disguise insecurity, recklessness, or questionable judgment. Ben appears designed around a similar balance. He needs enough enthusiasm to convince his teammates to follow him, even when his investigative decisions make the situation worse.

Serving as an executive producer may also give Marsden a larger role in shaping the adaptation. His producing credit does not reveal the extent of his daily creative responsibilities, but it places him among the figures involved beyond his on-screen performance.

Stephen Falk Returns to Complicated Relationships

Stephen Falk is closely associated with character-driven comedy that allows flawed people to remain messy, selfish, and unexpectedly sympathetic. You’re the Worst followed two deeply imperfect people attempting a relationship while resisting nearly every convention normally associated with romantic television comedy.

Bad News Dads offers Falk a different kind of adult relationship. Instead of centering romance, the project examines male friendship among fathers who may have allowed their social lives to shrink around work, parenting, and marriage.

Ben is described as friendship-starved, making the investigation emotionally useful to him before it becomes dangerous. Solving a possible murder gives him an excuse to spend time with his teammates, chase an objective, and feel necessary. The case may be real, but his eagerness to pursue it also comes from loneliness.

That element can keep the comedy grounded when the plot turns toward suspicious deaths and possible killers. The investigation is not only about discovering what happened. It gives the men a temporary escape from routines they find exhausting, even as their behavior threatens the homes they are trying to escape.

Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television add experienced television partners to the development. Greg Berlanti’s production company has worked across comedy, drama, mystery, superhero adaptations, and long-running network franchises. Warner Bros. Television is involved through Berlanti’s overall studio relationship.

Apple TV’s Mystery Comedy Lineup

The project would take Apple TV back into a genre that has produced some of its most playful series. The service has previously mixed murder investigations with comedy through titles including The Afterparty and Bad Monkey, using unusual detectives and unreliable suspects instead of conventional police procedurals.

Bad News Dads has a smaller social environment built into its premise. Its investigation begins within a recreational baseball team, giving the possible crime a defined circle of players, spouses, and families. The mystery can expand from that group while keeping the comedy attached to familiar relationships.

The half-hour format also suggests a faster pace than a traditional crime drama. Episodes could move between clues, family disputes, disastrous games, and Ben’s attempts to keep the investigation hidden. Apple TV has not disclosed whether the adaptation would preserve the novel’s complete mystery within one season or use the characters for an ongoing series.

Its status in development means casting beyond Marsden may become a decisive step. Ben needs two teammates willing to follow his theories, while the spouses and other team members must support both the domestic comedy and the suspect pool.

Adaptation Begins Before the Novel Arrives

Apple TV and its production partners are developing Bad News Dads well before most readers will have access to the source material. Adam Frost’s novel follows Ben and two friends from their luckless Los Angeles baseball team as they investigate the death of a teammate’s wife.

Frost has experience writing television mysteries, including work connected to Castle. His novel uses a murder investigation to explore parenting, marriage, friendship, and the private frustrations of fathers approaching middle age.

Working from an unpublished book can give the television team time to develop the adaptation alongside the novel’s arrival. It also means public knowledge of the story is currently limited to its official synopsis and the reported television premise.

No supporting actors have been named, leaving the identities of Ben’s investigative partners, teammates, spouses, and possible suspects open. Apple TV has also made no commitment about when production might begin.

Atria Books currently plans to publish the 288-page Bad News Dads novel on April 6, 2027.
